Religious Education of Children

The religious education of our children begins at home, because it is at home that they learn about life and love.  Parents are called by God to be both teachers and examples of faith. The Catholic Church teaches that, “the home is the natural environment for this teaching to take place” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2224). Indeed, home is often referred to as the “domestic church” because what is learned in Church will be internalized only if it is lived at home.  In his letter to families, Saint John Paul II wrote:

“Parents are the first and most important educators of their children and they also possess a fundamental competence in this area; they are educators because they are parents.”

Jesus welcomed children and so do we. At St. Henry, we receive each child as a priceless gift from God. Children show us what it’s like to be a child of the kingdom of heaven. They show us the simplicity of trusting God. Children, for us, are signs of faith. Thus, bringing our children up in the Catholic faith is a sacred obligation.  St. John Paul II said that “bringing up our children in the faith is a work of prime importance.” He said that “teaching and forming our children demands great love and profound respect for the child who has a right to a simple and true presentation of the Christian faith.”

St. Henry Catholic Parish offers the teaching of the faith to our children in two ways: through St. Henry Catholic School and through our CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) program.  All children in our parish should be enrolled in one of these two programs. The CCD program for public school and homeschooled children in first through eighth grade begins on Monday, September 10.  The program meets from September through May from 6:45-8 pm on Monday evenings.  It is in the interest of the child that they attend CCD first through eighth grades.  In order for children to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, they must be enrolled in the CCD program for two consecutive years, beginning in first grade with receiving the Sacraments in second grade.  For middle school students seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation, they must be enrolled for two consecutive years, beginning in seventh grade and should receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in the eighth grade.
